Is Blastoise Good in Red & Blue Playthrough?
Hard to knock out and useful in almost every major fight. Blastoise doesn't dominate the way some faster Pokemon do, but it rarely lets you down either. Handles Blaine and Giovanni without breaking a sweat, and its bulk means it can take a bad hit at the E4 and still keep going. The starter that just works.

Blastoise Weakness
Electric and Grass moves hit Blastoise for super-effective damage. Its Water typing keeps the defensive matchups simple. With 79 HP and balanced defenses, Blastoise can afford to eat a neutral hit or two.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Grass |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Ice |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

Moves List
Without TMs, Blastoise's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get Normal and Dark coverage and more on top of Hydro Pump and Surf for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.

Blastoise Red & Blue Guide
Mega Evolution isn't available in Red & Blue, but Blastoise does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Blastoise hits 610 BST.
In Red & Blue, use Blastoise as a balanced. Special attacks are the main output. Speed is middling, Surf is the primary attack.
Gigantamax Blastoise is exclusive to Sword & Shield, so it's not usable in Red & Blue. The form has a unique appearance and a signature G-Max move.
Game Availability
Blastoise first appeared in Red & Blue and spans 21 games across 9 generations. It later gained a Mega form in Generation 6 and a Gigantamax form in Generation 8, adding new dimensions to its competitive identity.
