Is Blastoise Good in Gold & Silver Playthrough?
Still bulky and reliable if you import one, but Gold and Silver's native Water roster makes Blastoise unnecessary. Feraligatr, Gyarados, and Lapras all do the job without a trade.

How to Get Blastoise in Gold & Silver
Level 36 turns Wartortle into Blastoise. Nothing to hunt on the map, just the evolution. The base Squirtle is Oak's post-Champion reward, so the full line lands after the credits.

How to Get Shiny Blastoise in Gold & Silver
Blastoise can't be hunted anywhere in Gold and Silver because the Squirtle line never shows up here, so bringing a shiny in by trade is the single path to one. See every game where Shiny Blastoise can be hunted
Blastoise Weakness
Electric and Grass moves hit Blastoise for super-effective damage. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Blastoise's overall bulk (79/100/105) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Electric, Grass |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Ice, Steel |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def

Blastoise Evolutions
Blastoise is the final form in a three-stage chain from Squirtle through Wartortle. Breeding this form produces Squirtle eggs (average hatch time). Evolving from Squirtle gave Blastoise the biggest boost in Sp.Def (+41), bringing the total to 530 stats. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed with Blastoise to get Squirtle eggs easily using 36 partners from the Monster and Water 1 egg groups. Notable egg moves include Confusion, Flail, Foresight and 3 more.
GS Blastoise Best Moveset
MoveRapid Spin removes MoveSpikes that chip the team on every switch, a utility role only a handful of Pokemon fill. MoveSurf from 85 Sp. Atk hits solidly, and MoveIce Beam adds coverage. Held ItemLeftovers keeps it healthy between spins. The support role finally gives Blastoise a niche the top Water-types can't claim.

Moves List
Don't skip the egg moves. Blastoise picks up Confusion and Flail only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Hydro Pump and Surf while coverage across 8 types adds range.

Blastoise Gold & Silver Guide
Mega Evolution isn't available in Gold & Silver, but Blastoise does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Blastoise hits 630 BST.
In Gold & Silver, use Blastoise as a balanced. Special attacks are the main output. Speed is middling, Surf is the primary attack.
Gigantamax Blastoise is exclusive to Sword & Shield, so it's not usable in Gold & Silver. The form has a unique appearance and a signature G-Max move.
Game Availability
Blastoise first appeared in Red & Blue and spans 21 games across 9 generations. It later gained a Mega form in Generation 6 and a Gigantamax form in Generation 8, adding new dimensions to its competitive identity.
