Is Scyther Good in Yellow Playthrough?
Available to everyone in Yellow, no version lock. Scyther has great speed and physical stats, but Bug moves are nearly useless in Gen 1. All that power goes toward Normal-type coverage. Looks better on paper than it plays.

Yellow Scyther Locations
Scyther is the priciest prize in the Celadon Game Corner at 6,500 Coins. It also lurks rare in the wild, but the coin route guarantees one if your luck in the grass runs dry.

Scyther Weakness
Scyther's Bug/Flying typing leaves it vulnerable to Rock, Fire, Electric, Ice, Poison, and Flying. Rock hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Ground-type attacks completely. Scyther's physical bulk (base 80 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Rock |
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Electric, Ice, Poison, Flying |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Bug |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Grass, Fighting |
| 0x (Immune) | Ground |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

Y Scyther Best Moveset
Impressive physical stats at 110 Attack and 105 Speed, entirely wasted because Bug moves deal negligible damage in this format. MoveSlash crits frequently from the high Speed (the critical hit formula rewards faster Pokemon), and MoveSwords Dance boosts Attack. The moves ignore Bug TermStab and focus on Normal physical damage.

Moves List
Without TMs, Scyther's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get Normal coverage on top of Wing Attack for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.

Scyther Yellow Guide
- Where in the Yellow Safari Zone can I find Scyther?
See the Locations section above for where to find Scyther in Yellow.
Safari rules: You can only use Safari Balls. No battling. Two tactical items shift the catch/flee trade-off:
- Throw bait to keep Scyther from fleeing (flee rate cut to 1/4) but it becomes harder to catch (catch factor halved).
- Throw a rock to make Scyther easier to catch (catch factor doubled) but it flees twice as often.
- Each effect lasts 2-6 random turns; throwing one cancels the other.
Scyther costs 6,500 Coins in Yellow. Earn coins by playing the slot machines on the Game Corner floor or buying them at the counter (1,000 coins for ₽10,000).
