How to Get Dragonair in Red & Blue
Dragonair only comes from raising a Dratini to level 30, which means fishing the Safari Zone with a Super Rod or paying Game Corner coins for the base first. The middle dragon stage is never a wild catch.
Catch Dratini at any of these 2 spots to eventually evolve into Dragonair.
Encountered via fishing with a Rod
How to Obtain Dragonair in RB
Dratini is your first catch on the way to Dragonair. You'll find fishing and gift encounters from Lv. 15-24 across 10 total spots in the chain.

Step 3Evolve into Dragonite
Dragonair Weakness
Dragonair is weak to Ice and Dragon. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Just 2 weak spots to worry about, which keeps teambuilding straightforward.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ice, Dragon |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Water, Electric, Grass |
- Only 15 types exist — Dark, Steel, and Fairy are absent
- Ghost has no effect on Psychic (a known bug, fixed in Gen II)
- Special stat governs both offense and defense — no Sp.Atk / Sp.Def split

TMs carry this one. Dragonair learns Dragon Rage naturally for STAB, but the offensive range comes almost entirely from technical machines. Normal and Ice and beyond give it real matchup play.
