The Cinnabar Gym door opens only once you carry the key from the mansion basement; inside, six quiz machines each lock a gate.
- A right answer opens the gate; a wrong one sends the room's trainer to battle you, and winning opens it too.
- Walk north up the east room and answer yes, or a Burglar battles you with Growlithe, Vulpix and Ninetales.
- Past the northeast gate, a Super Nerd with two Vulpix and a Ninetales fights only if you talk to him; no gate needs him.
- Head west along the top and answer no about nine badges, or a Super Nerd fields Ponyta, Charmander, Vulpix and Growlithe.

The next four gates run down the middle rooms, west along the bottom, then up the west side.
- Take the south gate into the center room and answer no, or the Burglar's lone Ponyta battles you.
- Go south again and answer no about thunder moves on Ground types, or the Super Nerd's lone Rapidash battles you.
- Cross the west gate at the bottom and answer yes, or a Burglar battles you with Vulpix and Growlithe.
- Climb north through the next gate and answer no about TM28MoveDigGroundClassPhysicalPower100Accuracy100%PP101st turn: Burrow 2nd turn: Attack, or a Super Nerd battles you with Growlithe and Vulpix.
