Is Celebi Good in Crystal Playthrough?
Crystal's signature legendary. The GS Ball event in the Virtual Console release opens Ilex Forest for a level 30 Celebi encounter. Grass/Psychic typing with balanced stats. The original Crystal cartridge required a Japan-only event, but the Virtual Console version made Celebi accessible worldwide.

How to Get Celebi in Crystal
Celebi was only ever given through the GS Ball event at the Ilex Forest shrine, never released normally. Without that distribution, the only way to one is trading it in.

1 MethodThe only route here is Soft Reset, about 1 in 8,192 on each try.
Soft Reset: Save in front of a static, gift, or legendary encounter, then reset until it sparkles.
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 864-- | -- |
| 25%one in four | 2,357-- | -- |
| 50%coin flip | 5,678-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 18,862-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.
Curious how fast a hunt could go? Work out your Crystal shiny odds for Celebi.
Celebi Weakness
Celebi's Psychic/Grass typing leaves it vulnerable to Bug, Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Ghost, and Dark. Bug hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It resists 6 types, so it can switch into a lot of moves safely. Celebi's overall bulk (100/100/100) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Bug |
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, Ghost, Dark |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Electric, Grass, Fighting, Ground, Psychic |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def

Moves List
The level-up pool is slim, so TMs matter here. Celebi's Rock and Normal coverage and more all comes from technical machines, built on top of Future Sight and Solar Beam for same-type damage. Future Sight and Dream Eater are the payoff moves.
