Is Ampharos Good in Crystal Playthrough?
Trade-only in Crystal due to the missing Mareep line. If you get one, Ampharos is still one of the best Electric-types in Gen 2. Strong special stats, decent bulk, and the coverage to handle everything from Clair's Gyarados to most of Kanto. The trade requirement is the only obstacle.

Ampharos cannot be caught in this game. It must be traded in from a compatible game where it appears in the wild. Cross-region trading typically becomes available after defeating the Elite Four. Alternatively, transfer the pre-evolution and level it up to Lv 30.

How to Get Shiny Ampharos in Crystal
Ampharos has no wild form to hunt in Gen 2, so a shiny one comes from Gold or Silver, where you raise a Mareep caught on Route 32 and evolve it all the way up before trading it in. See every game where Shiny Ampharos can be hunted
Ampharos Weakness
Ground moves hit Ampharos for super-effective damage. Few weaknesses and 3 resistances make the typing clean. With 90 HP and balanced defenses, Ampharos can afford to eat a neutral hit or two.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Ground |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Electric, Flying, Steel |
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def

GoodAmpharos Evolutions
End of the line. Ampharos caps a three-stage chain that started at Mareep. Breeding produces the base form, and eggs take an average time to hatch. Sp.Atk grew the most through evolution (+50 over Mareep), and Ampharos peaks at 500 total stats. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
