Wobbuffet Best Moveset
The single largest tier drop in the remake, falling from S-tier to F. AbilityShadow Tag prevents opponents from switching and 190 HP survives hits, but 33 in both offenses means the moveset can't deal direct damage. Nerfs to AbilityShadow Tag interactions across generations gutted the trapping strategy that defined it.
Counter and Mirror Coat reflected double damage, but guessing wrong meant doing nothing in Gen II (Gold & Silver). Without trapping, opponents just swapped out.

Shadow Tag arrived in Gen III (Ruby & Sapphire) and broke the game. Trap the opponent, predict physical or special, reflect for a guaranteed KO. Banned from standard play.

Two gens banned. Shadow Tag trapping plus Encore locked opponents into one move in Gen IV (Diamond & Pearl). Predict the lock, Counter or Mirror Coat. Simple and devastating.

Still effective but the metagame adapted in Gen V (Black & White). Faster Pokemon with mixed offenses made the physical/special prediction much harder.

The metagame evolved past Wobbuffet in Gen VI (X & Y). Mega Evolutions hit hard enough to OHKO through Counter attempts, and U-turn escaped Shadow Tag.

Z-Moves made damage prediction even harder in Gen VII (Sun & Moon). Wobbuffet's entire gimmick was too inconsistent for a format this explosive.

Three straight gens at the bottom in Gen VIII (Sword & Shield). Shadow Tag couldn't save a Pokemon that did nothing when it guessed wrong.

Base Stats
Raw HP carries Wobbuffet's bulk more than the defenses do. Attack barely registers. But that HP pool covers for it. A tough to catch Patient Pokemon that yields 2 HP EVs on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
It hates light and shock. If attacked, it inflates its body to pump up its counterstrike.
Wobbuffet Guide
Wobbuffet's biggest threats include Heracross (Bug), Misdreavus (Ghost), and Tyranitar (Dark), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. At base 33 Speed, Wobbuffet won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Wobbuffet can work for a story run. 405 BST is average, but Psychic typing fills a niche depending on your team composition.
We rate Wobbuffet C-Tier: a situational pick that fills a niche. At 405 BST, it fits the support role. Base 190 HP stands out.
Shadow Tag is the go-to ability for Wobbuffet. It prevents opponents from fleeing or switching out. Its hidden ability Telepathy can work in specific setups.
Base 33 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Wobbuffet is a mixed attacker with base 33 Attack and 33 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a support.
Game Availability
Available in 16 titles since its debut in Gold & Silver, Wobbuffet spans 9 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through wild encounters in most mainline games.
