Catch Ditto on Route 34 (walking, Lv 10, rare).

View Ditto locations

HeartGold & SoulSilver Ditto Locations

Ditto scatters across five areas with rates from common to rare, and the level spread is enormous, running from 10 all the way to 45. Some spots favor morning and day, so timing shifts which level you meet.

Wild Ditto may be holding when caught:

Quick Powder (50% chance) An item to be held by DITTO. Extremely fine yet hard, this odd powder boosts the Speed stat.
Metal Powder (5% chance) An item to be held by DITTO. Extremely fine yet hard, this odd powder boosts the Defense stat.

How is this calculated?

Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.

chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N,  where  p = 1 / odds per try

Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.

The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.

These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Where these shiny odds come from: Read our full methodology

Ditto Weakness

Ditto is weak to Fighting. On the flip side, it's immune to Ghost-type moves entirely. Only 1 weakness makes it relatively easy to build around defensively.

It can transform into anything. When it sleeps, it changes into a stone to avoid being attacked.

Its transformation ability is perfect. However, if made to laugh, it can’t maintain its disguise.

Ditto HeartGold & SoulSilver Guide

  • How do I catch Ditto in the HeartGold & SoulSilver Safari Zone?

See the Locations section above for where to find Ditto in HeartGold & SoulSilver.

Safari rules: You can only use Safari Balls. No battling. Two tactical items shift the catch/flee trade-off:

    • Throw bait to keep Ditto from fleeing (flee rate cut to 1/4) but it becomes harder to catch (catch factor halved).
    • Throw a rock to make Ditto easier to catch (catch factor doubled) but it flees twice as often.
    • Each effect lasts 2-6 random turns; throwing one cancels the other.
  • Yes. Wild Ditto in HeartGold & SoulSilver can hold Quick Powder (50%) or Metal Powder (5%). Use Thief (TM46) or Covet to swipe the held item without affecting your catch chance. Quickest way to farm rare items like Quick Powder.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Ditto can work for a story run. It rates C-Tier, a middle-of-the-pack pick, so the Normal typing decides whether it earns a team slot.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Ditto plays as a balanced. Not the fastest, so pick your spots carefully.

  • In HeartGold & SoulSilver, Jolly is the go-to nature for Ditto. That's +Speed / -Sp. Atk. Pair it with 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe EVs. Fits the balanced role.

Game Availability

Ditto has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
