Catch Ditto on Route 218 (Poké Radar, Lv 29-30, common).

View Ditto locations

Diamond & Pearl Ditto Locations

Ditto chains off the Poke Radar on one route, common once the chain gets going at level 29. The Radar is the sole way it appears, so plain grass-walking that route never turns one up.

Wild Ditto may be holding when caught:

Quick Powder (50% chance) Doubles Ditto’s Speed when held. The boost is lost after transforming.
Metal Powder (5% chance) Raises Ditto’s Defense and Special Defense by 50%. The boost is lost after transforming.

The best route is PokeRadar Chain at full boosts, about 1 in 200 on each try. Tune it below.

Step 1 · Encounter Method2 in Diamond & Pearl

PokeRadar Chain: Chain shaking-grass patches without breaking the combo. The rate peaks at a chain of 40.

Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.

How is this calculated?

Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.

chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N,  where  p = 1 / odds per try

Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.

The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.

These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Where these shiny odds come from: Read our full methodology

Ditto Weakness

Ditto is weak to Fighting. On the flip side, it's immune to Ghost-type moves entirely. Only 1 weakness makes it relatively easy to build around defensively.

DP Ditto Best Moveset

Transforms into the opponent and copies everything except HP, which stays at a pitiful 48. The moveset is whatever the target brings, and Ditto needs to switch in safely and survive long enough to copy something useful. Risky but unpredictable.

Pokemon Diamond / Pokemon Pearl

Ditto Diamond & Pearl Guide

  • Yes. Wild Ditto in Diamond & Pearl can hold Quick Powder (50%) or Metal Powder (5%). Use Thief (TM46) or Covet to swipe the held item without affecting your catch chance. Quickest way to farm rare items like Quick Powder.

  • In Diamond & Pearl, Ditto can work for a story run. It rates C-Tier, a middle-of-the-pack pick, so the Normal typing decides whether it earns a team slot.

  • In Diamond & Pearl, Ditto plays as a balanced. Not the fastest, so pick your spots carefully.

  • In Diamond & Pearl, Jolly is the go-to nature for Ditto. That's +Speed / -Sp. Atk. Pair it with 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe EVs. Fits the balanced role.

  • In Diamond & Pearl, Ditto pairs best with Dunsparce, Castform, and Chimecho. Dunsparce has Good synergy and covers what Ditto can't handle on its own.

Game Availability

Ditto has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 9 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
