Vileplume Best Moveset
110 Sp. Atk at 50 Speed behind Grass/Poison TermStab with AbilityEffect Spore threatening status on every physical contact. Held ItemRocky Helmet stacks additional punishment. NatureBold shores up the physical side. The moveset absorbs physical hits and punishes contact, but the Speed means relying on bulk to survive the first hit.
Grass/Poison with 100 base Special sounded fine on paper, but Psychic-types crushed it and Venusaur did the same job better in Gen I (Red & Blue).
Utility Moveset
- Sleep Powder
- Mega Drain
- Swords Dance
- Toxic
Recommended Teammates
Moonlight healing arrived and gave Vileplume a real defensive niche in Gen II (Gold & Silver). Sleep Powder into Moonlight stalling caught opponents off guard.

Chlorophyll made it dangerous in sun. Sunny Day plus Solar Beam was a legitimate offensive option that surprised defensive cores in Gen III (Ruby & Sapphire).
Wall Moveset
- Aromatherapy
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Sleep Powder
Recommended Teammates
Sun teams weren't popular and Vileplume's Speed was too low without weather. Roserade outclassed it as the go-to Grass/Poison option.
Special Sweeper Moveset
- Sludge Bomb
- Sleep Powder
- Solar Beam
- Hidden Power Ice
Recommended Teammates
Even with Drought Ninetales enabling Chlorophyll, Venusaur was the preferred sun sweeper in Gen V (Black & White). Vileplume couldn't outrun or outhit its rival.
Wall Moveset
- Giga Drain
- Aromatherapy
- Sludge Bomb
- Protect
Recommended Teammates
Effect Spore gave it defensive utility in Gen VI (X & Y). A 30% chance to inflict sleep, paralysis, or poison on contact was decent on a bulky Grass-type.
Special Tank Moveset
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Aromatherapy
- Moonlight
Recommended Teammates
Strength Sap arrived in Gen VII (Sun & Moon) and gave Vileplume excellent recovery while lowering the opponent's Attack. That one move justified the slot.
Bulky Support Moveset
- Sludge Bomb
- Strength Sap
- Aromatherapy
- Teeter Dance
Recommended Teammates
Strength Sap kept it functional in Gen VIII (Sword & Shield) but power creep made its low Speed and middling defenses harder to work around.
Support Moveset
- Giga Drain
- Sleep Powder
- Strength Sap
- Leech Seed
Recommended Teammates
Same Strength Sap defensive set in Gen IX (Scarlet & Violet). Not going anywhere new, but it did its one job well enough to stay relevant.

- Leech Seed
- Giga Drain

Base Stats
Vileplume's spread isn't flashy. Sp. Atk leads, Speed trails, 4 stats clear the bar. Tough to catch and worth 3 Sp. Atk EVs, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
It has the world’s largest petals. With every step, the petals shake out heavy clouds of toxic pollen.
Vileplume Guide
Don't let Vileplume's 490 base stat total fool you. Chlorophyll is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier as an attacker.
Watch for Arcanine (Fire), Lapras (Ice), and Aerodactyl (Flying) when using Vileplume. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Psychic-type attackers are also a problem.
Run Chlorophyll on Vileplume. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Vileplume also gets Effect Spore, but they don't compare.
Vileplume fills the attacker role. It's a special attacker with base 110 Sp. Atk. Base 50 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
Run Strengthsap, Leech Seed, Giga Drain, and Sludge Bomb on Vileplume. Strengthsap is the most common pick at 0% usage. This set covers the attacker role with a mix of damage and utility.
Game Availability
Vileplume has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 21 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
