Is Kingler Good in FireRed & LeafGreen Playthrough?

The physical/special mismatch from the originals carries into the remake. Kingler's 130 Attack is enormous, but Water attacks use Special in Gen 3. AbilityHyper Cutter keeps the Attack from being lowered, protecting the one thing Kingler does well. Handles Blaine through Water on the Special side. The Attack goes mostly to waste.

Kingler Weakness

Kingler's Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric and Grass. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Kingler's physical bulk (base 115 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

FRLG Kingler Best Moveset

130 Attack is enormous, but all Water moves use the Special stat in this format, leaving Kingler's best stat stranded. 50 Sp. Atk means Water TermStab hits weakly. AbilityHyper Cutter protects Attack from drops. The moveset fights the type system: massive physical power with no physical Water to channel it.

Kingler FireRed & LeafGreen Guide

  • Why can't I find Kingler in FireRed?

Kingler is exclusive to Pokemon LeafGreen. FireRed players have to trade for one.

    Pokemon LeafGreen cover art

    LeafGreen exclusive

Trade with a player who has Pokemon LeafGreen to obtain Kingler.

See the Locations section above for where to find Kingler in LeafGreen.

How to trade in FireRed and LeafGreen

GBA cartridges: You need a Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable and both players' FireRed/LeafGreen cartridges. Trade at the Cable Club on the 2nd floor of any Pokemon Center, which opens up shortly after Oak gives you the Pokedex.
Nintendo Switch (2026 release): Trading uses local wireless only. There is no online play, and no Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required. Both players head to the Pokemon Wireless Club on the 2nd floor of any Pokemon Center, then step into a Union Room. Up to four other players can join. Available once you have the Pokedex from Professor Oak.

Game Availability

Kingler first appeared in Red & Blue and spans 20 games across 10 generations. It later gained a Gigantamax form in Generation 8, adding new dimensions to its competitive identity.
