Machamp Best Moveset
Every swing lands with 130 Attack behind it. Fighting TermStab hits as hard as anything in the format per individual move. 55 Speed keeps cooldowns on the slower side, so the damage comes in heavy bursts rather than rapid fire. The moveset trades speed for raw power per hit.
Fighting-type was terrible in Gen I (Red & Blue). Psychic dominated everything, and Machamp's only STAB option was Submission with painful recoil.
Utility Moveset
- Earthquake
- Body Slam
- Submission
- Low Kick
Recommended Teammates
Cross Chop arrived and 130 Attack finally had a move to match it. Few things in Gen II (Gold & Silver) could safely switch into Machamp's raw power.

Guts boosted Attack when statused, turning burn and poison into advantages. Bulk Up sets with Cross Chop were scary to face in Gen III (Ruby & Sapphire).

No Guard made Dynamic Punch never miss. 100% confusion chance on a 100-power Fighting STAB was so strong it got Machamp banned in Gen IV (Diamond & Pearl).
Physical Tank Moveset
- Dynamic Punch

- Bullet Punch

No Guard Dynamic Punch was still great but the metagame was more prepared for it in Gen V (Black & White). Machamp's 55 Speed was really starting to hurt.
Physical Tank Moveset
- Dynamic Punch

Assault Vest was a perfect fit in Gen VI (X & Y). Special bulk without sacrificing the ability to attack gave Machamp a defensive angle it never had.

Z-Moves gave everyone burst damage in Gen VII (Sun & Moon), reducing Machamp's advantage. 55 Speed meant it ate a hit before throwing anything.
Physical Tank Moveset
- Dynamic Punch
- Stone Edge
- Bullet Punch

Recommended Teammates
No Guard stayed useful but newer Fighting-types with better Speed profiles were pulling ahead. Machamp could hit hard but rarely hit first.

Machamp Weakness
Machamp is weak to Flying, Psychic, and Fairy. With 90 HP and balanced defenses, Machamp can afford to eat a neutral hit or two.

Base Stats
Nothing fancy in Machamp's spread. It leans physical with Attack out front. And you'll get 3 Attack EVs per KO for it. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
The Gigantamax energy coursing through its arms makes its punches hit as hard as bomb blasts.
Machamp Guide
Machamp works as a wallbreaker with 505 BST behind it. B-Tier on our list: a solid choice for the right team. That 130 base Attack does the heavy lifting.
Machamp is obtained by trade-evolving Machoke. Catch or evolve a Machoke first, then trade. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Machoke to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required.
Guts is the go-to ability for Machamp. It increases Attack to 1.5× with a major status ailment. Its hidden ability Steadfast can work in specific setups. No Guard is the other option. Pick based on what your team needs.
Machamp is a physical attacker with base 130 Attack. Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. Speed tells the real story. At base 55 Speed, it won't be moving first often. Fits the wallbreaker role.
Game Availability
Available since Red & Blue, Machamp appears in 21 games spanning 10 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Gigantamax form in Generation 8.
