Leveling a Totodile to 18 produces Croconaw, the only way to one in Platinum. Of course that Totodile is not a Sinnoh starter, so it has to be migrated in before any of this.

Croconaw is the middle stage between Totodile and Feraligatr. It's a three-stage line with one more evolution to go. For breeding, average hatch time with plenty of partners via two egg groups. Croconaw isn't catchable in Platinum. Obtain one in HeartGold or SoulSilver, then trade it to Platinum.
In Platinum, Croconaw has 405 BST and evolves into Feraligatr. Compare the two forms before you give either one a team slot.
In Platinum, use Croconaw as a balanced. Physical side carries the damage. Not the fastest, Waterfall is the primary attack.
For Platinum, run Adamant on Croconaw. +Attack is what matters, and the -Sp. Atk cut doesn't hurt this set. Fits the balanced role.
For Platinum, build your team around Raticate, Lunatone, and Charmeleon. These have the highest co-usage rates with Croconaw in competitive formats. They cover each other's weaknesses.
