How to Get Garchomp in Platinum
The road to Garchomp runs through a Wayward Cave Gible, up to Gabite at 24, then the final stage at 48. It never spawns wild, but that long grind pays off with one of the strongest dragons in the game.
Wild Garchomp may be holding when caught:
Catch Gible or Gabite at any of these 2 spots to eventually evolve into Garchomp.
Encountered via tall grass encounters

How to Get Shiny Garchomp in Platinum
Garchomp tops the Gible line, so breed a Gible through a foreign Ditto and grind the shiny all the way up. Compare Shiny Garchomp odds across every game
Platinum Shiny Garchomp Calculator
2 MethodsThe best route is Masuda Method, about 1 in 1,639 on each try.
Masuda Method: Breed with a parent from a different-language game. Works on any breedable line.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 173-- | -- |
| 25%one in four | 472-- | -- |
| 50%coin flip | 1,136-- | -- |
| 90%very likely | 3,773-- | -- |
Time assumes -- at your pace and does not change your shiny odds.
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Garchomp Weakness
Ice and Dragon moves hit Garchomp for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Electric-type moves can't touch it at all. Garchomp's overall bulk (108/95/85) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Ice |
| 2x (Weak) | Dragon |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fire, Poison, Rock |
| 0x (Immune) | Electric |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)

Garchomp Platinum Guide
Mega Evolution isn't available in Platinum, but Garchomp does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Garchomp hits 700 BST.
In Platinum, use Garchomp as a sweeper. Physical side carries the damage. It outspeeds most threats, Earthquake is the primary attack.
For Platinum, build your team around Dialga, Kyogre, and Giratina Origin. These have the highest co-usage rates with Garchomp in competitive formats. They cover each other's weaknesses.
For Platinum, run Jolly on Garchomp. +Speed is what matters, and the -Sp. Atk cut doesn't hurt this set. Fits the sweeper role.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Diamond & Pearl, Garchomp has appeared in 14 titles over 6 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
