Is Alakazam Good in FireRed & LeafGreen Playthrough?

Status bounces back and Alakazam doesn't even need the help. AbilitySynchronize means burns and paralysis rebound, but the Speed and Special Attack are high enough that most fights end before status matters. Handles Koga, Bruno, and every E4 member. Blue uses Alakazam on all three Championship teams. Getting your own means matching his best weapon.

How to Get Alakazam in FireRed & LeafGreen

Trade evolution only. Send Kadabra to another player and it becomes Alakazam on arrival. On original GBA cartridges this requires a Link Cable or the Wireless Adapter plus a friend with another copy of any Gen 3 game. On the 2026 Nintendo Switch re-release, two Switch consoles in the same room handle the same trade over Switch local wireless — no accessory required. No wild Alakazam, no NPC trade for one.

Wild Alakazam may be holding when caught:

Twisted Spoon (5% chance) An item to be held by a Pokemon. A spoon imbued with telekinetic power boosts PSYCHIC-type moves.

Catch Abra or Kadabra at any of these 4 spots to eventually evolve into Alakazam.

Alakazam Weakness

Bug, Ghost, and Dark moves hit Alakazam for super-effective damage. Alakazam's special bulk (base 95 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

FRLG Alakazam Best Moveset

135 Sp. Atk at 120 Speed fires MovePsychic first and hardest in the format. AbilitySynchronize reflects status back at the user. The moveset dominates as a special attacker, outspeeding nearly everything and hitting with Psychic TermStab before opponents can respond. 55 HP means it can't take hits, but the Speed usually means it doesn't need to.

Don't skip the egg moves. Alakazam picks up Barrier and Encore only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Future Sight and Dream Eater while coverage across 8 types adds range.

It does not like physical attacks very much. Instead, it freely uses extrasensory powers to defeat foes.

Its brain can outperform a supercomputer. Its IQ (intelligence quotient) is said to be around 5,000.

Alakazam FireRed & LeafGreen Guide

  • No. Alakazam is not catchable in the wild. It only comes from trade-evolving Kadabra. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Kadabra to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required.

Game Availability

Available since Red & Blue, Alakazam appears in 21 games spanning 10 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Mega form in Generation 6.
