Yellow uses the same 151 Kanto roster as Red and Blue, but encounter locations are different. Pikachu is your locked starter and can't evolve. The tradeoff is you get all three Kanto starters for free during the story: Bulbasaur in Cerulean, Charmander on Route 24, and Squirtle in Vermilion. • 151, same as Red and Blue. The Kanto Pokedex doesn't change. What changes is where you find them and which ones you get for free. You still need to trade with Red or Blue to complete certain exclusives.

  • Your starter is Pikachu, and it can't evolve. It's decent early but falls off in the mid-game. The real starter choice is the three freebies: Bulbasaur from a girl in Cerulean City, Charmander from a trainer on Route 24, and Squirtle from Officer Jenny in Vermilion. Grab all three.

  • Pikachu follows you around and can't evolve. You get all three Kanto starters for free during the story. Jessie and James from the anime appear as recurring battles. Some wild encounter tables are different, and certain trade evolutions are available in-game. The core 151 roster and Gen 1 mechanics are the same.

  • No. Your starter Pikachu refuses the Thunder Stone. If you want a Raichu, you need to trade a Pikachu from Red or Blue and evolve it there, then trade it back. Or catch a Pikachu in the Power Plant (they're rare) and trade that one to another game.

  • Gen 1, same as Red and Blue. Yellow came out in 1998 for the Game Boy as the anime-inspired version. Pikachu follows you, Jessie and James appear, but the 151 Kanto Pokedex and core mechanics (no abilities, no held items, unified Special stat) are unchanged.

  • Bulbasaur: talk to a girl in a house near the Pokemon Center in Cerulean City after Pikachu is happy. Charmander: a trainer on Route 24 north of Cerulean gives it to you. Squirtle: Officer Jenny in Vermilion City after you beat Lt. Surge. All three are free, no trades required.
