Staryu Weakness

Staryu is weak to Electric and Grass. Its Water typing keeps the defensive matchups simple. Only 2 weaknesses makes it relatively easy to build around defensively.

Moves

TMs define Staryu's movepool. The natural moves cover basics with Hydro Pump and Surf, but the real versatility comes from technical machines giving it Normal and Ice coverage and more. That's where the options open up.

Staryu Guide

  • In Yellow, Staryu isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Starmie to unlock its full potential. At 355 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • In Yellow, Staryu's biggest threats include Jolteon (Electric) and Exeggutor (Grass), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • In Yellow, Staryu fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 70 Special. Base 85 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's fragile, can't afford to take many hits.

  • In Yellow, Staryu does the job early-game if you need a Water type on your team. Evolve it into Starmie before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.

  • In Yellow, Water typing gives Staryu 3 resistances. Base 85 Speed is the standout stat. Pure Water type with same-type attack bonus on Water moves.

Game Availability

Staryu has been part of the series since Red & Blue, appearing in 20 titles across all 10 generations. As a Gen 1 original, it's one of the most consistently available Pokemon in the franchise.
