Is Mew Good in FireRed & LeafGreen Playthrough?

Event-only. AbilitySynchronize passes status back to the attacker. 600 BST with perfect stat distribution and the ability to learn every TM. If you have a Mew, nothing in FRLG poses a challenge. For most players, an empty Pokedex entry waiting for a distribution.

How to Get Mew in FireRed & LeafGreen

Not available in FRLG through normal gameplay. Mew requires a special event distribution or transfer from another game.

How to Get Mew in FireRed & LeafGreen

HOME TRANSFER
Not Tradeable
Pokemon HOME compat for Switch FRLG is one-way out (deposit-only). Transferring Mew INTO FRLG via HOME is impossible by design even when HOME compat goes live. GBA versions cannot connect to HOME at all. Original GBA Western: Mew was never distributable in FRLG; transfer-only via Pokemon Box.
CARTRIDGE TRADE
Not Tradeable
Cartridge Trade requires a GBA Link Cable, which Switch hardware does not support — this path cannot be used on Switch FireRed/LeafGreen. Original GBA context: In Pokemon Emerald, Mew is found at Faraway Island after using the Old Sea Map. Note: Old Sea Map was a Japan-only Mystery Gift event in 2005, so Western Emerald players also could not legitimately catch Mew there. Trade Mew from Emerald to FireRed/LeafGreen via GBA link cable.
ORIGINAL GBA EVENT
Discontinued
Mew was distributed at Pokemon Tour events in 2006-2007 and through Toys R Us giveaways. These events ended over 15 years ago; existing event Mew remain legitimate but no new copies are being distributed.

Mew Weakness

Mew's Psychic typing leaves it vulnerable to Bug, Ghost, and Dark. Mew's overall bulk (100/100/100) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.

FRLG Mew Best Moveset

100 in every stat with AbilitySynchronize reflecting status. Mew learns every TM and move tutor in the game, giving it the largest moveset of any Pokemon available. The flexibility means any build is possible: special attacker, physical attacker, support, tank. No other Pokemon adapts to team needs this completely.

Moves List

Breadth over depth defines this movepool. Mew won't stack one type's damage ceiling, but coverage across 15 types means it always has an effective option. Dream Eater and Psychic anchor the STAB core.

Pokedex Entry

A POKéMON of South America that was thought to have been extinct. It is very intelligent and learns any move.

So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide.

Mew FireRed & LeafGreen Guide

  • Yes. Mew is a post-game Pokemon. You need to defeat the Elite Four and enter the Hall of Fame first. Enter the Hall of Fame to trigger the event-ticket distribution. Switch re-release auto-awards the Mystic Ticket (Lugia/Ho-Oh on Navel Rock) and Aurora Ticket (Deoxys on Birth Island); original GBA required the discontinued 2004-2005 Mystery Gift events.

Game Availability

Mew first appeared in Red & Blue and has been available in 20 titles. Mythical distribution means event-only access in most games, making it one of the harder Pokemon to collect.
