Gloom sits in the middle of its evolution line — stronger than Oddish but not yet at full power. Most trainers push through to Vileplume as fast as possible. Known as the Weed Pokemon. Flexible enough to run physical or special sets.

Nothing fancy in Gloom's spread. It leans mixed with Sp. Atk out front. And you'll get 2 Sp. Atk EVs per KO for it. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

The smell from its drool-like syrup and the pollen on its petals is so bad, it may make opponents faint.

Egg moves make a real difference. Gloom gets Flail and Razor Leaf exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Normal coverage rounds out the picture alongside Petal Dance and Solar Beam.

    CHALLENGING
or evolve from Oddish (Step 1)
  • At 395 BST, Gloom is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Vileplume before bringing it to any serious fight.

  • Gloom's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Cloyster (Ice), and Dodrio (Flying), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Psychic-type attackers are also a problem. At base 40 Speed, Gloom won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Oddish evolves into Gloom at level 21. Gloom can evolve into Vileplume and Bellossom depending on the method. Gloom is a middle-stage evolution in the Oddish line.

  • Gloom is a special attacker with base 85 Sp. Atk. Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. But the speed tells the real story — base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the trick room role.

  • Gloom appears in 20 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.

Present since Red & Blue, Gloom appears in 20 games spanning 9 generations. Gen 1 originals like Gloom have the longest track record of availability in the series.
