Ivysaur sits in the middle of its evolution line — stronger than Bulbasaur but not yet at full power. Most trainers push through to Venusaur as fast as possible. Only weak to Fire, Ice, Flying, and Psychic. Known as the Seed Pokemon.
You won't find a real weakness in Ivysaur's stat line. It's well-rounded for the Seed Pokemon, and what it does with that depends on moveset and items. Yields 2 Sp. Atk and Sp. Def EVs, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
The bulb on its back grows as it absorbs nutrients. The bulb gives off a pleasant aroma when it blooms.
Ivysaur Weakness
VulnerableType-wise, Ivysaur takes extra damage from Fire, Ice, Flying, and Psychic. The Grass/Poison typing picks up 4 resistances to work with.
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
- Special stat split into Sp.Atk and Sp.Def
Ivysaur sits between Bulbasaur and Venusaur in this three-stage line. Not the final form yet. For breeding, average hatch time with a decent partner pool via two egg groups. HP has grown the most so far (+15), but there's still another 120 stats to gain in the final evolution.
How to Evolve
Breed with Ivysaur to get Bulbasaur eggs easily using 23 partners from the Plant and Monster egg groups. Notable egg moves include Light Screen, Petal Dance, Razor Wind and 2 more.
Best Build
Gen 2 build content has limited support (no abilities).

The egg pool carries weight here. Light Screen and Petal Dance aren't available any other way for Ivysaur, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Solar Beam and Petal Dance for solid options.

Ivysaur is a special attacker with base 80 Sp. Atk. Enough bulk to take a hit or two, too. But the speed tells the real story — at base 60 Speed, it won't be moving first often.
