Alakazam's 3-stage chain starts with Abra, which appears in the wild in the locations below. Level through 3 stages while you find a trade partner. Everything except the trade step is solo.
Alakazam Weakness
Bug, Ghost, and Dark moves hit Alakazam for super-effective damage. Alakazam's special bulk (base 95 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Bug, Ghost, Dark |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Fighting, Psychic |
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)

Alakazam Evolutions
Alakazam evolved from Abra's chain using a trade. It's a non-standard trigger, so check the details below. Breed this form to get Abra eggs (average hatch time). The evolution from Abra pushed Alakazam to 500 total stats. Sp.Def saw the largest single gain at +40. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Breeding
Breed with Alakazam to get Abra eggs easily using 53 partners from the Humanshape egg group. Notable egg moves include Barrier, Encore, Fire Punch and 7 more.
B2W2 Alakazam Best Moveset
Opponents need a dedicated faster attacker or specially defensive Dark type ready because 135 Sp. Atk at 120 Speed behind AbilityMagic Guard and Held ItemLife Orb fires boosted Psychic TermStab at zero HP cost. The moveset demands an answer before it starts attacking, and nothing absorbs the coverage comfortably.

Alakazam Black 2 & White 2 Guide
In Black 2 & White 2, Alakazam looks average on paper at 500 BST. But Magic Guard is why it sees play. Build around that and it pulls its weight. A-Tier sweeper on our tier list. Focus Blast with Focus Sash is the standard set.
Mega Evolution isn't available in Black 2 & White 2, but Alakazam does have a Mega form in Gen 6-7 games (X/Y, ORAS, Sun/Moon). Mega Alakazam hits 600 BST.
No. Alakazam is not catchable in the wild. It only comes from trade-evolving Kadabra. Trade needs a Game Boy Advance link cable and a second GBA running another Gen 3 game (FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald). Trade Kadabra to a friend, then have them trade it back. The 2026 Switch re-release supports the same trade through local wireless on the Pokemon Center 2F Wireless Club, with no cables required.
Alakazam gets Magic Guard, Synchronize, and Inner Focus. But Magic Guard is the one that matters. It's the centerpiece of every viable set. Build around that. With base 120 Speed, Magic Guard gives Alakazam an edge before opponents can react.
Game Availability
Available since Red & Blue, Alakazam appears in 21 games spanning 10 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Mega form in Generation 6.
