Abomasnow Best Moveset
AbilitySnow Warning sets snow on entry, enabling Aurora Veil (halves physical and special damage for 5 turns) and boosting Blizzard accuracy to 100%. Held ItemIcy Rock extends snow to 8 turns. NatureModest at 92 Sp. Atk fires Grass and Ice TermStab behind the snow support. Seven type weaknesses are brutal, but the snow utility is the role.
The only Pokemon with Snow Warning in Gen IV (Diamond & Pearl). Hail damaged every non-Ice-type each turn, and Blizzard never missed in the weather Abomasnow set.

Permanent hail from Snow Warning chipped entire teams in Gen V (Black & White), and Abomasnow was the only way to get it. Peaked here.

Mega Abomasnow got Snow Warning plus higher stats in Gen VI (X & Y). But weather was nerfed to five turns, and other weather setters were better in practice.
Special Attacker Moveset
- Blizzard
- Giga Drain

Three gens of decline by Gen VII (Sun & Moon). Grass/Ice left Abomasnow weak to Fighting, Fire, Rock, Bug, Flying, Poison, and Steel. Seven weaknesses was too many.
Mixed Tank Moveset
- Blizzard
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
Recommended Teammates
No Mega form in Gen VIII (Sword & Shield). Base Abomasnow was slow, frail to most of the metagame, and hail barely mattered when better weather options existed.
Bulky Support Moveset
- Earthquake
- Wood Hammer
- Avalanche
- Iron Tail

Snow replaced hail as the weather condition in Gen IX (Scarlet & Violet), removing the residual damage that was Abomasnow's main contribution to any team.

Abomasnow Weakness
Abomasnow is weak to Fire, Fighting, Poison, Flying, Bug, Rock, and Steel. Watch out for Fire attacks, those deal 4x damage. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses. Abomasnow's overall bulk (90/105/105) lets it take a hit or two from most weaknesses before going down.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 4x (Critical) | Fire |
| 2x (Weak) | Fighting, Poison, Flying, Bug, Rock, Steel |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Water, Electric, Grass, Ground |

Base Stats
Attack leads and Speed gets almost nothing. That's Abomasnow's stat line in a nutshell. 5 stats sit in respectable range, but the spread is brutal. Moderately hard to find and yields 2 Attack and Sp. Atk EVs.
The buds on its back have sprouted into impressive icicles that can whip up massive blizzards of −22 degrees Fahrenheit.
Abomasnow Guide
Snow Warning changes the entire equation for Abomasnow. The 594 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked B-Tier as a wallbreaker.
Abomasnow can Mega Evolve into Mega Abomasnow. That's 694 BST, up from 594. The stat redistribution often changes its best role. Mega Stone required, one per battle.
Abomasnow's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Machamp (Fighting), and Nidoking (Poison), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Charizard is the most dangerous since Fire moves deal 4x damage. Flying, Bug, Rock, and Steel-type attackers are also a problem. With 7 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 30 Speed, Abomasnow won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Snow Warning is what you want on Abomasnow. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. On wall sets, Snow Warning pairs with Abomasnow's base 105 Defense to absorb physical hits on the switch.
Base 30 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Abomasnow is a mixed attacker with base 132 Attack and 132 Sp. Atk. Defensively? Tanky enough to absorb a few hits. Best used as a wallbreaker.
Game Availability
Since debuting in Diamond & Pearl, Abomasnow has appeared in 14 titles over 7 generations. Along the way, it received a Mega form in Generation 6, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
