While most trainers evolve Snover into Abomasnow immediately, the unevolved form has a niche with Eviolite boosting its defenses. Watch the Fire matchup though — quadruple damage means one hit can end it. Known as the Frost Tree Pokemon.

Snover's stats barely vary. 0 sit in respectable range with no real gaps. It's a blank slate for EV investment. Worth 1 Attack EV, slow 1.25M XP grind to max.

You'll want to breed for Double-Edge and Growth on Snover. These egg moves aren't just nice to have. Combined with STAB from Wood Hammer and Solar Beam, they expand what Snover can actually threaten in practice.

  • Snover isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Abomasnow to unlock its full potential. At 334 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Infernape (Fire), Lucario (Fighting), and Gengar (Poison) when using Snover. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Infernape is the most dangerous since Fire moves deal 4x damage. Flying, Bug, Rock, and Steel-type attackers are also a problem. With 7 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 40 Speed, Snover won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Snover evolves into Abomasnow at level 40. Snover is the base form of this evolutionary line.

  • Run Snow Warning on Snover. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Snover also gets Soundproof, but they don't compare.

  • Snover fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 62 Sp. Atk. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.

  • Snover appears in 14 games, including Platinum, HeartGold & SoulSilver, and Diamond & Pearl.

Snover first appeared in Diamond & Pearl and has been available in 14 games across 6 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
