Littleroot Town Guide
All three work, but they shape the early game differently. Mudkip has the smoothest run, since its Water moves soak the Rock-type first gym, and as a Water and Ground Marshtomp it's later immune to Wattson's Electric gym. Torchic becomes a hard-hitting Fire and Fighting type, and Treecko is the fast, fragile pick. You choose from Birch's bag on Route 101.
Towns have no walkable grass, so the only wild Pokemon are out on the water. Surf or fish along a town's edge and you can pull Wingull, Tentacool, or Magikarp. A few towns hand you a Pokemon outright instead, like your starter in Littleroot and a Beldum at Steven's house in Mossdeep.
Lilycove tops the list, with the only full Department Store and the ferry that runs out to the Battle Frontier once you're Champion. Mossdeep hands you a free Beldum and fields a two-leader gym, and Slateport's market and shipyard keep pulling you back for story beats.
