How to Get Shiny Dugtrio in Sun & Moon
Dugtrio digs in around Haina Desert, and a long SOS chain there pulls the shiny rate to 1 in 274. Compare Shiny Dugtrio odds across every game
Sun & Moon Shiny Dugtrio Calculator
3 MethodsThe best route is SOS Chaining at full boosts, about 1 in 274 on each try. Tune it below.
SOS Chaining: Leave one ally fainted and force endless calls. Bonus rolls step up at 11, 21, and 31 calls.
Masuda Method: Breed with a parent from a different-language game. Works on any breedable line.
Full Odds: Walk through grass, surf, or fish. Every encounter is its own independent shiny roll.
How many you have done, or plan to do.
| Chance | Encounters |
|---|---|
| 10%lucky few | 29 |
| 25%one in four | 79 |
| 50%coin flip | 190 |
| 90%very likely | 630 |
How is this calculated?
Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.
chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N, where p = 1 / odds per try
Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.
The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.
These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Dugtrio Weakness
Dugtrio's Ground/Steel typing leaves it vulnerable to Fire, Water, Fighting, and Ground. It shrugs off Electric and Poison-type attacks completely. 8 resistances give it solid defensive coverage on top of that. At base 110 Speed, Dugtrio outspeeds most threats and doesn't need to tank what it can outrun.
| Damage | Types |
|---|---|
| 2x (Weak) | Fire, Water, Fighting, Ground |
| 0.5x (Resist) | Normal, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Dragon, Steel, Fairy |
| 0.25x (Resist) | Rock |

SM Dugtrio Best Moveset
120 Speed with AbilityArena Trap locks grounded opponents in place, removing their ability to switch out. Alolan Dugtrio adds Steel typing with AbilityTangling Hair dropping Speed on contact instead. 100 Attack fires Ground TermStab fast. The moveset traps opponents that can't escape Ground, but 35 HP means one resisted hit back can still end it.

Its shining gold hair provides it with protection. It's reputed that keeping any of its fallen hairs will bring bad luck.

Dugtrio Sun & Moon Guide
Yes. Wild Dugtrio in Sun & Moon can hold Soft Sand (5%). Use Thief (TM46) or Covet to swipe the held item without affecting your catch chance. Quickest way to farm rare items like Soft Sand.
In Sun & Moon, Dugtrio has niche appeal at best. The E-Tier rating means you're fighting uphill by mid-game. There are better Ground/Steel Pokemon available.
Dugtrio has an Alolan form that swaps the typing and reshuffles the stats. Introduced in Gen 7. Worth checking if the original version doesn't fit your team.
Sand Force is the hidden ability. Strengthens rock, ground, and steel moves to 1.3× their power during a sandstorm. Not always the best choice. Compare it to Dugtrio's regular abilities before committing.
In Sun & Moon, use Dugtrio as a sweeper. Physical side carries the damage. It outspeeds most threats, Earthquake is the primary attack.
Game Availability
