The best route is Masuda Method at full boosts, about 1 in 512 on each try. Tune it below.

How is this calculated?

Every encounter has the same shiny chance, the Shiny Odds Per Try shown above. Each one is a separate roll that does not care how many you have already done, so the more you hunt, the higher your overall chance of at least one shiny. The formula below turns your odds and your number of tries into that combined chance.

chance after N tries = 1 − (1 − p)^N,  where  p = 1 / odds per try

Example at 1 in 8,192 (classic full odds): about 864 encounters for a 10 percent chance, 5,678 for 50 percent, and 18,862 for 90 percent.

The table above flips that around: it shows how many encounters it takes to reach a 10, 25, 50, and 90 percent chance at your current odds. Turning on boosts like the Shiny Charm, sandwiches, or chains improves your odds, so the encounter numbers drop.

These are estimates, not promises. Most games have no pity counter, meaning no guaranteed shiny no matter how many you hunt, so even Very Likely is not guaranteed: some hunters find one early, others go well past that point.

Where these shiny odds come from: Read our full methodology

Curious how fast a hunt could go? Work out your Sun & Moon shiny odds for Archen.

Archen Weakness

Type-wise, Archen takes extra damage from Water, Electric, Ice, Rock, and Steel. Ground moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. The Rock/Flying typing picks up 5 resistances to work with.

Pokedex Entry

It is the ancestor of all bird Pokémon. Archen itself could not actually fly but moved by hopping from treetop to treetop.

To all appearances flightless, it was able to glide down from tall treetops to snag its prey.

Archen Sun & Moon Guide

  • Receive a restored fossil Pokemon from the woman in the Fossil Restoration Center on Route 8. Archen is revived at level 5. Give it Rare Candies or experience-share if you want it ready for the late-game. Note: this fossil is only available in Moon. The other version of Sun & Moon has a different fossil.

  • In Sun & Moon, for a casual playthrough, Archen works as a placeholder. Rock/Flying coverage is useful early. The real payoff is Archeops. That's where the stats start mattering.

  • In Sun & Moon, Archen plays as a attacker. Speed is middling, so pick your spots carefully.

  • In Sun & Moon, Jolly is the go-to nature for Archen. That's +Speed / -Sp. Atk. Pair it with 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe EVs. Fits the attacker role.

  • In Sun & Moon, Archen pairs best with Poipole, Leafeon, and Rapidash. Poipole has Decent synergy and covers what Archen can't handle on its own.

Game Availability

Since Black & White, Archen has been obtainable in 7 games. A Generation 5 debut means a shorter history, but Archen has appeared steadily across every generation since.
