Seel is technically a pre-evolution of Dewgong, but it holds its own in formats where Eviolite is allowed. Thick Fat halves incoming Fire and Ice damage, adding extra value. Part of the Gen 1 roster. Only weak to Electric and Grass.

You won't find a real weakness in Seel's stat line. It's well-rounded for the Sea Lion Pokemon, and what it does with that depends on moveset and items. Yields 1 Sp. Def EV, on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.

Don't let the NFE status fool you. Seel with Eviolite hits bulk numbers that compete with final forms. A spread EV build EVs and Calm nature maximize that, and Icebody handles the rest.

Most of Seel's flexibility comes from TMs. Same-type output runs through Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail, but Normal and Ice and the rest of the TM pool push it from predictable to genuinely threatening.

Seel doesn't appear in Scarlet & Violet. Transfer it from Red, Yellow, or FireRed to add it to your collection. Check the source games below for encounter details.

Seel is not available as a wild encounter in this game.

Also found in:

  • At 325 BST, Seel is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Dewgong before bringing it to any serious fight.

  • Seel's biggest threats include Jolteon (Electric) and Exeggutor (Grass), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Seel evolves into Dewgong at level 34. Seel is the base form of this evolutionary line.

  • Seel gets Thick Fat, Hydration, and Ice Body. But Thick Fat is the one that matters — it's the centerpiece of every viable set. Build around that.

  • Seel is leaning toward the physical side (base 45 Attack). But the speed tells the real story — base 45 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.

  • Seel appears in 19 games, including Yellow, Red & Blue, and Gold & Silver.

Present since Red & Blue, Seel appears in 19 games spanning 9 generations. Gen 1 originals like Seel have the longest track record of availability in the series.
