Without Chlorophyll, Tropius wouldn't see any competitive play. With it? It doubles its Speed in sun, turning modest base stats into a real offensive threat. Grass/Flying is solid coverage on top of that. Ground moves can't touch it, which offsets the 5 weaknesses somewhat.

Tropius's spread favors balanced defenses over offense. HP leads the defensive side, Speed eats the cost. Yields 2 HP EVs per defeat. Slow 1.25M XP grind to level.

Tropius Weakness

Vulnerable

Ice, Fire, Poison, Flying, and Rock-type moves hit Tropius for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Ground-type moves can't touch it at all.

Tropius leads with Focus Sash insurance. Even if it can't take a hit naturally, it'll survive long enough to deal early damage. Max Sp. Atk and Speed EVs go all-in on offense since bulk doesn't matter here.

Tropius can't be caught in Sun & Moon. Bring it over from Ruby, Emerald, or Scarlet instead. The encounter info below covers the source games.

Tropius is not available as a wild encounter in this game.

Catch in the wild in:

Then trade to Sun & Moon.

Also found in:

  • Don't let Tropius's 460 base stat total fool you. Chlorophyll is what makes it tick — it punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier.

  • Watch for Lapras (Ice), Charizard (Fire), and Nidoking (Poison) when using Tropius. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Lapras is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Flying and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • Tropius doesn't evolve and has no evolutionary line. It's a Grass/Flying-type Pokemon with a 460 base stat total.

  • Run Chlorophyll on Tropius. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Tropius also gets Solar Power and Harvest, but they don't compare.

  • Tropius fills the balanced role. It's leaning toward the special side (base 72 Sp. Atk). At base 51 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • Tropius appears in 14 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.

Tropius first appeared in Ruby & Sapphire and has been available in 14 games across 7 generations. Obtainable through wild encounters in most titles where it appears.
