Mid-stage Pokemon like Marill rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Azumarill, which is where the real potential kicks in. Only weak to Electric and Grass. Known as the Aqua Mouse Pokemon.
Marill's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Attack trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Common in the wild and worth 2 HP EVs, on a fast 800K XP curve.
The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, lets it swim without drowning.
The end of its tail serves as a buoy that keeps it from drowning, even in a vicious current.
Marill Weakness
GoodMarill's Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric and Grass moves. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Only 2 weaknesses makes it relatively easy to build around defensively.

Marill is the middle stage between Azurill and Azumarill. It's a three-stage line with one more evolution to go. For breeding, quick to hatch with a decent partner pool via two egg groups. So far, HP got the biggest boost (+20 from Azurill). The final form adds another 170 stats on top.
How to Evolve
Breed with Marill to get Azurill eggs easily using 16 partners from the Fairy and Water1 egg groups. Notable egg moves include Amnesia, Belly Drum, Foresight and 5 more.

Gen 2 build content has limited support (no abilities).

The natural movepool does the job, but Amnesia and Belly Drum from the egg pool give Marill something extra. Pair those with Surf and Waterfall for STAB and coverage across 7 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

Marill isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Azumarill to unlock its full potential. At 250 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Marill fills the balanced role. It's leaning toward the physical side (base 20 Attack). Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.
