Mid-stage Pokemon like Marill rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Azumarill, which is where the real potential kicks in. Only weak to Electric and Grass. Known as the Aqua Mouse Pokemon.

Marill's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Attack trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Common in the wild and worth 2 HP EVs, on a fast 800K XP curve.

The end of its tail serves as a buoy that keeps it from drowning, even in a vicious current.

Marill Weakness

Good

Marill's Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric and Grass moves. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread.

Best Build

Try selecting a different game/generation filter, or check back later.

The natural movepool does the job, but Amnesia and Aqua Jet from the egg pool give Marill something extra. Pair those with Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail for STAB and coverage across 9 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

Grab Marill from the locations below, it shows up in the wild. Drop it at the nursery to hatch Azurill. From there, level the baby through the remaining stages to Marill.

or evolve from Azurill (Step 1)
  • Marill isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Azumarill to unlock its full potential. At 250 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Raikou (Electric) and Venusaur (Grass) when using Marill. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about. At base 40 Speed, Marill won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Azurill evolves into Marill by leveling up. Marill evolves into Azumarill at level 18. Marill is a middle-stage evolution in the Azurill line.

  • Run Huge Power on Marill. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Marill also gets Thick Fat and Sap Sipper, but they don't compare.

  • Marill fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 20 Sp. Atk. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.

  • Marill appears in 17 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.

Marill first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 17 games across 8 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
