Mid-stage Pokemon like Marill rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Azumarill, which is where the real potential kicks in. Dragon moves can't touch it, and only 3 types hit it super-effectively. Known as the Aqua Mouse Pokemon.
Marill's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Attack trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Common in the wild and worth 2 HP EVs, on a fast 800K XP curve.
The fur on its body naturally repels water. It can stay dry even when it plays in the water.
The oil-filled tail functions as a buoy, so it’s fine even in rivers with strong currents.
Marill Weakness
GoodMarill's Water/Fairy typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric, Grass, and Poison moves. It shrugs off Dragon-type attacks completely. 6 resistances give it solid defensive coverage on top of that. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread.
Marill is the middle stage between Azurill and Azumarill. It's a three-stage line with one more evolution to go. For breeding, quick to hatch with no compatible partners via two egg groups. So far, HP got the biggest boost (+20 from Azurill). The final form adds another 170 stats on top.
How to Evolve
Breed with Marill to get Azurill eggs easily from the Fairy and Water1 egg groups. Notable egg moves include Amnesia, Aqua Jet, Belly Drum and 17 more.

Breadth over depth defines this movepool. Marill won't stack one type's damage ceiling, but coverage across 10 types means it always has an effective option. Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail anchor the STAB core.

Transfer Moves
Marill can't be caught in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Transfer Azurill from Diamond, Platinum, or Brilliant Diamond and evolve through the 2-stage line to get it. The step cards below map the full chain.
Marill isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Azumarill to unlock its full potential. At 250 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Run Huge Power on Marill. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Marill also gets Thick Fat and Sap Sipper, but they don't compare.
Marill fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 20 Sp. Atk. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.
