Azurill is a baby Pokemon from Gen 3 — it can't hold its own in battle yet. The payoff is Azumarill, which is where the real competitive value lives. Worth raising if you need one on your team. Ghost and Dragon moves can't touch it, and only 2 types hit it super-effectively.

HP and Defense carry most of Azurill's stat budget. Attack's the obvious dump stat. Common in the wild and yields 1 HP EV. Follows a fast 800K XP curve.

Azurill Weakness

Excellent

Type-wise, Azurill takes extra damage from Poison and Steel. Ghost and Dragon moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread.

The egg pool carries weight here. Body Slam and Camouflage aren't available any other way for Azurill, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Double-Edge and Hyper Voice for solid options.

Azurill can't be caught in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon. Bring it over from Diamond, Platinum, or Brilliant Diamond instead. The encounter info below covers the source games.

Azurill is not available as a wild encounter in this game.

Also found in:

  • Azurill is meant to evolve into Marill. At 190 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Azurill's biggest threats include Nidoking (Poison) and Metagross (Steel), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about. At base 20 Speed, Azurill won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Azurill evolves into Marill by leveling up. Azurill is the base form in a 3-stage evolutionary line.

  • Huge Power is what you want on Azurill. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Thick Fat, Sap Sipper) work on paper but Huge Power is what makes Azurill worth using.

  • Base 20 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Azurill is leaning toward the physical side (base 20 Attack). Defensively? Fragile — can't afford to take many hits.

  • Azurill appears in 15 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.

Available in 15 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Azurill spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in most mainline games.
