Mid-stage Pokemon like Marill rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Azumarill, which is where the real potential kicks in. Dragon moves can't touch it, and only 3 types hit it super-effectively. Known as the Aqua Mouse Pokemon.

Marill's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Attack trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Common in the wild and worth 2 HP EVs, on a fast 800K XP curve.

Using its tail as a float, it dives underwater. It likes eating plants that grow in riverbeds.

Brilliant Diamond

The tip of its tail is filled with oil that is lighter than water, so it acts as a float.

Marill Weakness

Good

Marill's Water/Fairy typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric, Grass, and Poison moves. It shrugs off Dragon-type attacks completely. 6 resistances give it solid defensive coverage on top of that. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread.

One guaranteed turn is all Marill needs. Focus Sash buys it, HP-heavy investment EVs make it count, and Huge Power adds something extra. The goal: deal early damage and deal damage with its STAB move. The remaining moves gives it play beyond just the lead turn.

Breadth over depth defines this movepool. Marill won't stack one type's damage ceiling, but coverage across 10 types means it always has an effective option. Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail anchor the STAB core.

or evolve from Azurill (Step 1)
  • Marill isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Azumarill to unlock its full potential. At 250 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Raikou (Electric), Venusaur (Grass), and Crobat (Poison) when using Marill. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. At base 40 Speed, Marill won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Azurill evolves into Marill by leveling up. Marill evolves into Azumarill at level 18. Marill is a middle-stage evolution in the Azurill line.

  • Run Huge Power on Marill. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Marill also gets Thick Fat and Sap Sipper, but they don't compare.

  • Marill fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 20 Sp. Atk. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.

  • Marill appears in 17 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.

Marill first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 17 games across 8 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
