Mid-stage Pokemon like Marill rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Azumarill, which is where the real potential kicks in. Only weak to Electric and Grass. Known as the Aqua Mouse Pokemon.
Marill's spread isn't flashy. HP leads, Attack trails, 0 stats clear the bar. Common in the wild and worth 2 HP EVs, on a fast 800K XP curve.
The oil-filled end of its tail floats on water. It keeps Marill from drowning even in a strong current.
Marill Weakness
GoodMarill's Water typing leaves it vulnerable to Electric and Grass moves. It resists 4 types, giving it decent defensive coverage. Thick Fat reduces Fire/Ice damage, further improving the defensive spread.
- Fairy type does not exist — Dragon has fewer checks
- Physical / Special split now per-move (introduced Gen IV)
Marill is the middle stage between Azurill and Azumarill. It's a three-stage line with one more evolution to go. For breeding, quick to hatch with a decent partner pool via two egg groups. So far, HP got the biggest boost (+20 from Azurill). The final form adds another 170 stats on top.
How to Evolve
Breed with Marill to get Azurill eggs easily using 38 partners from the Fairy and Water1 egg groups. Notable egg moves include Amnesia, Aqua Jet, Belly Drum and 15 more.
Thickfat isn't flashy, but it matters. Combined with Rindoberry for extra utility and max HP and Defense EVs, Marill fills the defensive wall slot reliably. Bold nature finishes the spread.

The natural movepool does the job, but Amnesia and Aqua Jet from the egg pool give Marill something extra. Pair those with Hydro Pump and Aqua Tail for STAB and coverage across 8 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

Marill isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Azumarill to unlock its full potential. At 250 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Run Huge Power on Marill. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Marill also gets Thick Fat and Sap Sipper, but they don't compare.
Marill fills the balanced role. It's a special attacker with base 20 Sp. Atk. Base 40 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go.
Marill appears in 17 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.
Marill first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 17 games across 8 generations. Obtainable through catching or hatching as a base form in most titles where it appears.
