Flying Type Weakness

Flying type weakness: Electric, Ice and Rock moves deal 2× damage to the Flying type, and it takes no damage from Ground attacks. Corviknight and Skarmory (Flying/Steel) take normal damage from Ice and Rock, so only Electric and Fire hit them for 2×. Articuno (Ice/Flying) has a 4× Rock weakness.

Rules & history

Flying type rules beyond the chart

Battle effects tied to the Flying type, and what was different in older games.

Beyond the chart

  • Off the ground
Damaging Ground moves miss, and Spikes, Toxic Spikes, Sticky Web and terrain don’t affect Flying types. Thousand Arrows still hits them.
  • Roost
A successful Roost removes the user’s Flying type until the end of that turn.
  • Can be grounded
Gravity, Smack Down, Thousand Arrows and Iron Ball ground Flying types.
  • Stealth Rock: 25% on switch-in
Flying is weak to Rock, so Stealth Rock takes twice the usual 12.5% of max HP. Heavy-Duty Boots (Gen 8+) block it.

How Flying changed across generations

  1. GEN4Diamond & PearlSince Gen 4, each Flying move is physical or special based on the move itself. Before that, every Flying move was physical.
