The stat bars tell the story: Defense carries everything and Sp. Atk's dead weight. But this Iceberg Pokemon still yields 2 Defense EVs per fight on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
Its ice-covered body is as hard as steel. Its enormous frame crushes anything that stands in its way.
Fighting, Steel, Water, Grass, Ground, and Rock moves hit Avalugg for super-effective damage. Fighting and Steel hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The Ice/Rock typing picks up 4 resistances to work with. Avalugg's physical bulk (base 184 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Avalugg is what Bergmite becomes. Breed it for Bergmite eggs (average hatch time). Plenty of partners for breeding via two egg groups. Eggs are average hatch time. The evolution from Bergmite pushed Avalugg to 514 total stats. Defense saw the largest single gain at +99. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.

The level-up pool is slim, so TMs matter here. Avalugg's Normal and Dark coverage and more all comes from technical machines, built on top of Meteor Beam and Blizzard for same-type damage. Take Down and Blizzard are the payoff moves.

The level-up pool tells the story here. Avalugg learns Take Down and Double-Edge naturally, plus enough variety that TMs feel like bonuses. Steel and Normal coverage and more extends the reach beyond that.
Blizzard and Mountain Gale sit at the top of a stacked same-type pool for Avalugg. That many Ice and Rock options means real flexibility in what you slot. And Normal and Dark coverage and more covers the gaps.
Don't skip the egg moves. Avalugg picks up Aurora Veil and Mirror Coat only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Blizzard and Stone Edge while coverage across 7 types adds range.

Avalugg looks average on paper at 514 BST. But Strong Jaw is why it sees play. Build around that and it pulls its weight. B-Tier wallbreaker on our tier list.
Watch for Lucario (Fighting), Aegislash (Steel), and Milotic (Water) when using Avalugg. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Lucario is the most dangerous since Fighting moves deal 4x damage. Grass, Ground, and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 38 Speed, Avalugg won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Avalugg gets Strong Jaw, Ice Body, and Sturdy. But Strong Jaw is the one that matters. It's the centerpiece of every viable set. Build around that. On wall sets, Strong Jaw pairs with Avalugg's base 184 Defense to absorb physical hits on the switch.
Avalugg is leaning toward the physical side (base 127 Attack). Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 38 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the wallbreaker role.
Run Rapid Spin, Bodypress, Recover, and Avalanche on Avalugg. Rapid Spin is the most common pick at 21% usage. Avalanche provides reliable STAB damage.
Available since X & Y, Avalugg appears in 8 games spanning 5 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Hisuian form in Generation 8.
