Stats & Training

The stat bars tell the story: Defense carries everything and Speed's dead weight. But this Iceberg Pokemon still yields 2 Defense EVs per fight on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.

Its ice-covered body is as hard as steel. Its cumbersome frame crushes anything that stands in its way.

Avalugg Weakness

Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel moves hit Avalugg for super-effective damage. Avalugg's physical bulk (base 184 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Don't skip the egg moves. Avalugg picks up Barrier and Mirror Coat only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Blizzard and Ice Beam while coverage across 8 types adds range.

Avalugg Guide

  • In X & Y, Avalugg works as a wall with 514 BST behind it. C-Tier on our list: a niche pick in X & Y's meta. Avalanche with Rocky Helmet is the standard set.

  • In X & Y, watch for Infernape (Fire), Conkeldurr (Fighting), and Golem (Rock) when using Avalugg. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Steel-type attackers are also a problem. At base 28 Speed, Avalugg won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.

  • Own Tempo prevents confusion. That's the one you want on Avalugg. Sturdy is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Ice Body works too if your team needs something different.

  • Avalugg is a physical attacker with base 117 Attack. Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. Speed tells the real story. Base 28 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the wall role.

  • In X & Y, run Avalanche, Rapid Spin, Recover, and Toxic on Avalugg. Avalanche is the most common pick at 24% usage. Avalanche provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Available since X & Y, Avalugg appears in 8 games spanning 5 generations. Beyond its original form, it gained a Hisuian form in Generation 8.
