Slow is good when Trick Room is up, and Avalugg is about as slow as they come. Ice typing gives it a defined role on the team. Only weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel. Known as the Iceberg Pokemon.
The stat bars tell the story: Defense carries everything and Speed's dead weight. But this Iceberg Pokemon still yields 2 Defense EVs per fight on a medium-fast 1M XP curve.
As Avalugg walks along with Bergmite on its back, it comes across pods of Cetitan. It lets them pass to avoid conflict.
This Pokémon uses its massive icy body to flatten anything that gets in its way. When it’s floating out on the ocean, it looks exactly like drift ice.
Avalugg Weakness
FragileFire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel-type moves hit Avalugg for super-effective damage. Avalugg's physical bulk (base 184 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
Avalugg is what Bergmite becomes. Breed it for Bergmite eggs (average hatch time). Plenty of partners for breeding via two egg groups. Eggs are average hatch time. The evolution from Bergmite pushed Avalugg to 514 total stats. Defense saw the largest single gain at +99.
How to Evolve
Breed with Avalugg to get Bergmite eggs easily using 54 partners from the Mineral and Monster egg groups. Notable egg moves include Aurora Veil, Mirror Coat, Mist.
Sturdy gives Avalugg passive value while it walls. Impish nature boosts Defense, max HP and Defense EVs maximize the physical wall profile, and Heavy-Duty Boots keeps it in the game.

Don't skip the egg moves. Avalugg picks up Aurora Veil and Mirror Coat only through breeding, and both fill gaps the natural movepool can't. STAB runs through Blizzard and Ice Beam while coverage across 8 types adds range.

Avalugg works as a wallbreaker with 514 BST behind it. B-Tier on our list — a solid choice for the right team. That 184 base Defense does the heavy lifting.
Watch for Infernape (Fire), Conkeldurr (Fighting), and Golem (Rock) when using Avalugg. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Steel-type attackers are also a problem. At base 28 Speed, Avalugg won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Own Tempo prevents confusion — that's the one you want on Avalugg. Sturdy is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Ice Body works too if your team needs something different.
Avalugg is leaning toward the physical side (base 117 Attack). Tanky enough to absorb a few hits, too. But the speed tells the real story — base 28 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the wallbreaker role.
Avalugg appears in 8 games, including X & Y, Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, and Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon.
