Tropius's spread favors balanced defenses over offense. HP leads the defensive side, Speed eats the cost. Yields 2 HP EVs per defeat. Slow 1.25M XP grind to level.
It lives in tropical jungles. The bunch of fruit around its neck is delicious. The fruit grows twice a year.
Delicious fruits grew out from around its neck because it always ate the same kind of fruit.
Ice, Fire, Poison, Flying, and Rock moves hit Tropius for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Ground-type moves can't touch it at all.

Tropius is what you get. No evolutions, but it breeds through two egg groups with plenty of partners. Hatching is average hatch time. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Start with max HP and Sp. Def EVs. Calm nature gives Tropius the right special wall lean, Sitrus Berry adds a one-time health recovery at low HP, and Harvest works in the background. Substitute is the main damage option.

Moves
Without TMs, Tropius's movepool is bare bones. With them, you get Normal and Dragon coverage and more on top of Leaf Storm and Solar Blade for STAB. The natural kit handles basics, but TMs are doing the real work.

Don't let Tropius's 460 base stat total fool you. Chlorophyll is what makes it tick. It punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier.
Watch for Lapras (Ice), Charizard (Fire), and Nidoking (Poison) when using Tropius. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Lapras is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Flying and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.
Run Chlorophyll on Tropius. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Tropius also gets Solar Power and Harvest, but they don't compare.
Tropius fills the balanced role. It's leaning toward the special side (base 72 Sp. Atk). At base 51 Speed, it won't be moving first often. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
Run Substitute, Leech Seed, Air Slash, and Dragon Dance on Tropius. Substitute is the most common pick at 20% usage. This set covers the balanced role with a mix of damage and utility.
Tropius first appeared in Ruby & Sapphire and has been available in 15 games across 8 generations. Obtainable through wild encounters in most titles where it appears.
