Geodude sits at the start of its evolution line — not yet at full power, but that changes fast. Most trainers push through to Golem as fast as possible. Known as the Rock Pokemon. Built to hit on the physical side.
The stat bars tell the story: Defense carries everything and Speed's dead weight. But this Rock Pokemon still yields 1 Defense EV per fight on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
The longer a GEODUDE lives, the more its edges are chipped and worn away, making it more rounded in appearance. However, this POKéMON’s heart will remain hard, craggy, and rough always.
When GEODUDE sleeps deeply, it buries itself halfway into the ground. It will not awaken even if hikers step on it unwittingly. In the morning, this POKéMON rolls downhill in search of food.
Geodude Weakness
FragileType-wise, Geodude takes extra damage from Water, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Ground, and Steel. Watch out for Water and Grass attacks, those deal 4x damage. Electric moves do nothing thanks to a full immunity. The Rock/Ground typing picks up 5 resistances to work with. Geodude's physical bulk (base 100 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.
- Dark and Steel types added — Fairy does not exist yet
- Moves are Physical or Special based on type, not per move
Geodude kicks off a three-stage evolution line through Graveler all the way to Golem. For breeding, quick to hatch with a decent partner pool via one egg group. Evolving adds up to 195 stat points total.
How to Evolve
Breed Geodude easily with 23 breeding partners from the Mineral egg group. Pass egg moves like Block, Mega Punch, Rock Slide to offspring.
Normal coverage gives Geodude answers even while choice-locked. Choice Band provides raw power at the cost of move flexibility, and max Attack and Speed EVs with Rockhead mean every prediction that lands hits hard.

The egg pool carries weight here. Block and Mega Punch aren't available any other way for Geodude, and they meaningfully change what it threatens. Stack those on top of Earthquake and Dig for solid options.

Easy grab on Geodude with high spawn rates across 12 locations in early-game areas. Two different catch methods are in play here. The sorted list below shows the full spread so you can pick the most convenient spot.
Best Locations
Before you go hunting for Geodude, check which of the 12 spots belong to your version. Ruby and Sapphire each have different rock smash and walking encounters at Lv. 5-40.
At 300 BST, Geodude is firmly in pre-evolution territory. Evolve it into Graveler before bringing it to any serious fight.
Geodude's biggest threats include Gyarados (Water), Venusaur (Grass), and Lapras (Ice), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Gyarados is the most dangerous since Water moves deal 4x damage. Fighting, Ground, and Steel-type attackers are also a problem. With 6 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter. At base 20 Speed, Geodude won't outrun any of these threats so switching to a resist is usually the safer play.
Geodude can evolve into Graveler and Alolan Graveler depending on the method. Geodude is the base form in a 5-stage evolutionary line.
Rock Head is the go-to ability for Geodude. It protects against recoil damage. Its hidden ability Sand Veil can work in specific setups. Sturdy is the other option — pick based on what your team needs.
Geodude is a physical attacker with base 80 Attack. But the speed tells the real story — base 20 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. Fits the trick room role.
