Rules & history

Poison type rules beyond the chart

Battle effects tied to the Poison type, and what was different in older games.

Beyond the chart

  • Can’t be poisoned
Poison types are immune to poison and bad poison, unless the attacker has Corrosion.
  • Toxic can’t miss
From Gen 6, Toxic used by a Poison type always hits.
  • Clears Toxic Spikes
A grounded Poison type removes Toxic Spikes from its side when it switches in.

How Poison changed across generations

  1. GEN2Gold & SilverPoison now resists Bug, and Poison moves no longer hit Bug for 2×. Both were 2× in Gen 1.
  2. GEN4Diamond & PearlSince Gen 4, each Poison move is physical or special based on the move itself. Before that, every Poison move was physical.
  3. GEN6X & YFairy type added. Poison moves hit Fairy for 2×, and Poison resists Fairy moves.
