Mid-stage Pokemon like Marshtomp rarely see competitive play outside of special formats. It's a waypoint on the road to Swampert, which is where the real potential kicks in. Known as the Mud Fish Pokemon. Can go either physical or special depending on the set.

Attack and HP carry most of Marshtomp's stat budget. Speed's the obvious dump stat. Tough to catch and yields 2 Attack EVs. Follows a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

It is at its best when on muddy ground with poor footing. It quickly overwhelms foes struggling in mud.

Marshtomp Weakness

Good

Marshtomp's Water/Ground typing leaves it vulnerable to Grass moves. Grass hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric-type attacks completely. 4 resistances help offset the weaknesses.

You'll want to breed for Curse and Ice Ball on Marshtomp. These egg moves aren't just nice to have. Combined with STAB from Hydro Pump and Earthquake, they expand what Marshtomp can actually threaten in practice.

Marshtomp isn't available in the wild in FireRed & LeafGreen. Start by transferring Mudkip from Ruby, Emerald, or Brilliant Diamond. The evolution path from Mudkip to Marshtomp is covered in the steps below.

How to Obtain Marshtomp in FireRed & LeafGreen

  1. Mudkip
    Step 1Obtain Mudkip

    Receive as a gift in:

Then trade to FireRed & LeafGreen to continue the evolution chain.

    Also found in:

  2. Marshtomp
    Step 2Marshtomp
  • Marshtomp is meant to evolve into Swampert. At 405 BST, the stats aren't there for competitive play yet. Pre-evolution Pokemon rarely hold up against fully evolved threats.

  • Watch for Exeggutor (Grass) when using Marshtomp. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Exeggutor is the most dangerous since Grass moves deal 4x damage. Only 1 weakness means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at level 16. Marshtomp evolves into Swampert at level 36. Marshtomp is a middle-stage evolution in the Mudkip line.

  • Torrent strengthens water moves to inflict 1.5× damage at 1/3 max HP or less — that's the one you want on Marshtomp. Damp is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses.

  • Base 50 Speed is low. Priority moves or Trick Room are the way to go. On offense, Marshtomp is a physical attacker with base 85 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • Marshtomp appears in 16 games, including Ruby & Sapphire, FireRed & LeafGreen, and Emerald.

Available in 16 titles since its debut in Ruby & Sapphire, Marshtomp spans 7 generations of Pokemon games. It's accessible through catching or hatching as a base form in most mainline games.
