Jumpluff punches above its weight class thanks to Chlorophyll. It doubles its Speed in sun, which is enough to make up for stats that don't impress on their own. Ground moves can't touch it, which offsets the 5 weaknesses somewhat. Known as the Cottonweed Pokemon.

Jumpluff's spread isn't flashy. Speed leads, Attack trails, 2 stats clear the bar. Tough to catch and worth 3 Speed EVs, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

It drifts on seasonal winds and spreads its cotton-like spores all over the world to make more offspring.

Once it catches the wind, it deftly controls its cotton-puff spores to float, even around the world.

Jumpluff Weakness

Vulnerable

Ice, Fire, Poison, Flying, and Rock-type moves hit Jumpluff for super-effective damage. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. The upside? Ground-type moves can't touch it at all. Jumpluff's special bulk (base 95 Sp.Def) helps absorb special-type weaknesses, though physical moves exploit the lower Defense.

Chlorophyll helps Jumpluff stick around while dealing real damage. Leftovers for passive recovery each turn, a spread EV build EVs for the right balance, and Leech Seed as the main threat. Not the fastest, but it doesn't need to be.

Without breeding, Jumpluff misses out on Amnesia and Confusion. That's 7 egg moves adding depth that the base kit lacks. STAB comes from Solar Beam and Giga Drain, with Normal and Psychic coverage rounding things out.

Jumpluff doesn't appear wild. Catch Hoppip instead, it shows up at solid rates. Evolve it at level 27 to get Jumpluff. The 3-stage chain is mapped in the step cards below.

How to Obtain Jumpluff in FireRed & LeafGreen

The path to Jumpluff starts with Hoppip at Lv. 5-16 via surfing and walking encounters. 1 catchable stage total, with locations listed for each one below.

  3. Jumpluff
    Step 3Jumpluff
  • Don't let Jumpluff's 460 base stat total fool you. Chlorophyll is what makes it tick — it punches way above its weight class. We rate it C-Tier as a pivot.

  • Watch for Cloyster (Ice), Arcanine (Fire), and Nidoking (Poison) when using Jumpluff. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Flying and Rock-type attackers are also a problem. With 5 weakness types, most competitive teams carry at least one counter.

  • Skiploom evolves into Jumpluff at level 27. Jumpluff is the final evolution in a 3-stage line starting from Hoppip. It sits at 460 BST in its evolved form.

  • Run Chlorophyll on Jumpluff. It's the ability that defines how you build around it and the main reason it holds a competitive niche. Jumpluff also gets Leaf Guard and Infiltrator, but they don't compare.

  • Jumpluff fills the pivot role. It's leaning toward the physical side (base 55 Attack). Base 110 Speed lets it outrun most of the field. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • Jumpluff appears in 16 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.

Jumpluff first appeared in Gold & Silver and has been available in 16 games across 8 generations. Obtainable through wild encounters in most titles where it appears.
