Best Resident Evil Games Tier List
Each full remake gets its own grade beside its original on this board of the best Resident Evil games, so it doubles as a guide to which version of each story to play. Requiem, the newest entry, opens in A and plays like two games at once: slow first-person horror for Grace Ashcroft, third-person action for Leon.

Board breakdown
The Resident Evil 2 remake leads the series and makes the best first game for a newcomer, with Mr. X stalking you through the police station as you explore it. Resident Evil 4 is the only story on the board with both versions in S: take the 2023 remake if you play just one, or the 2005 original for the faster, sillier game that moved the series toward action.
Leon and Claire's intersecting nights in the Raccoon City police station, rebuilt with an over-the-shoulder camera and a Mr. X who keeps roaming after you. The best first Resident Evil for a newcomer.
- The 2023 remake keeps the shape of Leon's mission in rural Spain while modernising its controls, visuals and story. Our pick if you only play one version of Resident Evil 4.
- Leon's 2005 rescue mission in rural Spain swapped fixed camera angles for a view over his shoulder and became the blueprint for modern action horror. It is sillier and faster than the remake, and still worth playing on its own terms.
It depends on which story you mean. For the first game, play the 2002 remake, which keeps the fixed camera angles but adds new areas and far less cheesy voice acting. Resident Evil 3 is the one case to start with the original, even though both versions grade B: the 1999 game is harder and fuller, while the 2020 remake is short and cuts content fans remember.

Choose the camera before the game, because it changes how Resident Evil feels more than anything else. Fixed angles bring the classic slow dread, led by the 2002 remake; first person brings the scares closest, led by Resident Evil 7; and the over-the-shoulder view suits players who want to aim and fight, with the Resident Evil 2 remake on top. Requiem lets you swap between first person and third person whenever you like, so it is the easy pick if you cannot decide.

Every S pick, plus Requiem, Village, Resident Evil 7 and the 2002 remake, has been released on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and PC. The gaps sit with the 1990s originals: Resident Evil, 2 and 3 never reached Xbox, and Code: Veronica is the one mainline game here without a PC version. Outbreak, the first Resident Evil with online co-op, stayed on PlayStation.
