Is Sandslash Good in Sword & Shield Playthrough?

Sandslash does the Ground-type job respectably. Handles Kabu, contributes against Raihan, and AbilitySand Veil gets occasional value in sandstorm. The problem is Excadrill exists in the same game with better stats and typing. Sandslash works fine for a casual run but never stands out.

Sandslash Weakness

Sandslash is weak to Fire, Fighting, and Ground. Watch out for Fire and Fighting attacks, those deal 4x damage. On the flip side, it's immune to Poison-type moves entirely. With 8 resistances, the defensive profile is strong. Sandslash's physical bulk (base 120 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

SwSh Sandslash Best Moveset

100 Attack and 110 Defense behind Ground TermStab give this moveset a solid physical foundation. AbilitySand Rush doubles the 65 Speed in sand, which almost reaches viable territory. The typing and coverage are fine but the power ceiling and base Speed fall short of everything competing for a sand team slot.

Moves List

Egg moves make a real difference. Sandslash gets Counter and Crush Claw exclusively through breeding, filling gaps that TMs and level-up can't touch. Coverage across 8 types rounds out the picture alongside Steel Roller and Blizzard.

Pokedex Entry

The drier the area Sandslash lives in, the harder and smoother the Pokémon's spikes feel when touched.

It climbs trees by hooking on with its sharp claws. Sandslash shares the berries it gathers, dropping them down to Sandshrew waiting below the tree.

Sandslash Sword & Shield Guide

  • In Sword & Shield, Slush Rush changes the entire equation for Sandslash. The 450 BST doesn't tell the full story. Ranked C-Tier as a tank. Knock Off with Life Orb is the standard set.

  • In Sword & Shield, Sandslash's biggest threats include Charizard (Fire), Machamp (Fighting), and Golem (Ground), all carrying super-effective STAB moves. Charizard is the most dangerous since Fire moves deal 4x damage.

  • Slush Rush is what you want on Sandslash. Every competitive set worth running is built with that ability in mind. The alternatives (Snow Cloak) work on paper but Slush Rush is what makes Sandslash worth using.

  • At base 65 Speed, it won't be moving first often. On offense, Sandslash is a physical attacker with base 100 Attack. Defensively? Enough bulk to take a hit or two. Best used as a tank.

  • For Sword & Shield, the core moveset is Knock Off, Rapid Spin, Earthquake, and Drillrun. Knock Off leads at 0% usage. Earthquake provides reliable STAB damage.

Game Availability

Since debuting in Red & Blue, Sandslash has appeared in 20 titles over 10 generations. Along the way, it received an Alolan form in Generation 7, keeping it relevant across different competitive metas.
