Map LocationsGold&Silver
"Johto and Kanto connect on a single save in Gold and Silver, doubling the explorable map at release. The time-of-day system started here, with Hoothoot only showing up at night and Ledyba only appearing in the morning."
GS MAP
Both Johto and Kanto sit on Gold and Silver's map, with markers split between the two regions and the Magnet Train line linking them in the postgame. Mt. Mortar near Mahogany Town stashes a Tyrogue gift inside the cave's western chamber, easy to walk past on a first run.
GOLD & SILVER LOCATIONS
Search by name, filter by method or type, or scroll from New Bark Town through both Johto and Kanto in story order. Lake of Rage just north of Mahogany Town stages the Red Gyarados encounter that triggers Team Rocket's return after their Gen 1 disbandment.

SPECIAL ENCOUNTERS
Special encounters are the one-time, fixed-location Pokemon you won't catch in random wild grass. Gold & Silver has 6 total: 6 Static (gift Pokemon and route roadblocks).
The in-game clock divides the day into Morning (4-10am), Day (10am-6pm), and Night (6pm-4am). Many routes swap species depending on the time. Hoothoot and Spinarak appear at night, Ledyba and Sentret during the day. Some rare Pokemon only show up in one time slot. Check the encounter tables here for the time tag on each species.
Teach a Pokemon Headbutt (TM02 from Ilex Forest) and use it on small trees to shake out wild Pokemon. Each tree has a hidden ID that determines if it's a rare or common tree. Rare trees hold Heracross, Pineco, and Aipom. The same tree always gives the same pool, so once you find a good one, keep coming back.
Yes. After beating the Johto Elite Four, you get the S.S. Ticket and can sail to Vermilion City. All 8 Kanto Gyms are open with higher-level leaders, plus most Kanto routes have wild encounters at levels 20-40. Mt. Silver at the end goes up to level 50 with Red's team at 73-81 as the final challenge.
All three legendary beasts (Raikou, Entei, and Suicune) roam Johto's routes after you encounter them at the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City. They flee on the first turn unless you trap them with Mean Look. They keep their HP between encounters, so chip them down over multiple random meetings. Check the roaming encounter data on individual route pages.
Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday in National Park. You get 20 Park Balls and 20 minutes to catch one Pokemon. Your catch is judged on species rarity, level, and remaining HP when caught. First place wins a Sun Stone. Scyther and Pinsir are the trophy catches but Butterfree and Beedrill score well too.
Gold & Silver has 84 locations with wild Pokemon encounters, featuring 167 unique Pokemon species. The location with the most Pokemon variety is Route 27 with 21 unique species.
The top fishing locations in Gold & Silver by Pokemon variety are: Olivine City (10 species), Union Cave (8 species), Route 26 (6 species). These locations offer the widest selection of water-type Pokemon through various rod types (Old Rod, Good Rod, Super Rod).
