Gligar's spread isn't flashy. Defense leads, Sp. Atk trails, 2 stats clear the bar. Moderately hard to find and worth 1 Defense EV, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.
Its tail is tipped by a thick, horrible stinger. To bring down prey, it will first obscure their vision by covering their faces with its body, and then it will use the stinger to inject them with venom.
Gligar's Ground/Flying typing leaves it vulnerable to Ice and Water. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric and Ground-type attacks completely. Gligar's physical bulk (base 105 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Evolving Gligar into Gliscor takes a held item. It's not a simple level-up, so check the chain details below. The evolved forms gain up to 80 total stats over Gligar. View every chain in the Evolution Chart.
How to Evolve
Spikes is the priority every time Gligar comes in. Impish nature and max HP and Defense EVs keep it alive long enough to get layers down, while Eviolite provides a bulk boost that only works before full evolution. Immunity rounds it out.

Moves
Breadth over depth defines this movepool. Gligar won't stack one type's damage ceiling, but coverage across 13 types means it always has an effective option. Earthquake and High Horsepower anchor the STAB core.
Level-Up Moves
TM Moves

Tutor Moves
Gligar's movepool balances level-up moves with TM options. Consistent STAB comes from Earth Power and Mud Bomb, and coverage across 8 types keeps opponents from switching in for free. No major gaps here.
The natural movepool does the job, but Agility and Baton Pass from the egg pool give Gligar something extra. Pair those with Earthquake and Dig for STAB and coverage across 7 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.
The natural movepool does the job, but Agility and Baton Pass from the egg pool give Gligar something extra. Pair those with Earthquake and Earth Power for STAB and coverage across 9 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.
Gligar doesn't appear in Scarlet & Violet. Transfer it from Gold, Crystal, or Legends: Arceus to add it to your collection. Check the source games below for encounter details.
Gligar appears at decent spawn rates across 1 spots in mid-game routes. Sort by Best below if you want the highest rate, or Earliest if you want the quickest access point in your playthrough.
Best Locations to Catch Gligar in Legends: Arceus
high spawn rates in mid-game routes across 6 locations. Gligar's one of the easier catches on the list. Knock it out fast and save your time for harder targets.
Best Locations to Catch Gligar in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl
6 walking spots from Lv. 16-63 for Gligar. Sorted by game progression with rates on each row, so you can compare without scrolling through everything.
Gligar isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Gliscor to unlock its full potential. At 430 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.
Hyper Cutter prevents Attack from being lowered by other Pokémon. That's the one you want on Gligar. Immunity is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Sand Veil works too if your team needs something different.
Gligar fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 75 Attack. Base 85 Speed is workable. Faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.
Gligar does the job early-game if you need a Ground/Flying type on your team. Evolve it into Gliscor before the later gyms and it holds up fine through the story.
Gligar has been available in 17 games since Gold & Silver, though obtaining it requires an item-based evolution. This extra step makes it less common than Pokemon found through standard wild encounters.
