While most trainers evolve Gligar into Gliscor immediately, the unevolved form has a niche with Eviolite boosting its defenses. Electric and Ground moves can't touch it, and only 2 types hit it super-effectively. Sits at a decent but contested Speed tier.

Gligar's spread isn't flashy. Defense leads, Sp. Atk trails, 2 stats clear the bar. Moderately hard to find and worth 1 Defense EV, on a 1.06M XP medium-slow curve.

Gligar Weakness

Excellent

Gligar's Ground/Flying typing leaves it vulnerable to Ice and Water moves. Ice hits land at 4x, so they're the biggest threat. It shrugs off Electric and Ground-type attacks completely. Gligar's physical bulk (base 105 Def) helps cushion physical weakness hits, but special attackers are the bigger threat.

Bulk and offense in one package. Gligar runs Assault Vest for a special bulk boost with no status moves allowed with a Jolly nature, so it survives long enough to threaten with Earthquake. Flexible EVs EVs and the remaining moves make it hard to safely switch into.

Recommended Teammates

The natural movepool does the job, but Agility and Baton Pass from the egg pool give Gligar something extra. Pair those with Earthquake and Dig for STAB and coverage across 7 types for reach, and the kit fills out nicely.

  • Gligar isn't fully evolved, so it's not built for competitive play. You'll want to evolve it into Gliscor to unlock its full potential. At 430 BST, it's a stepping stone rather than a team anchor.

  • Watch for Cloyster (Ice) and Starmie (Water) when using Gligar. They all hit it super-effectively with STAB. Cloyster is the most dangerous since Ice moves deal 4x damage. Only 2 weaknesses means fewer dedicated counters to worry about.

  • Gligar evolves into Gliscor while holding a Razor Fang. Gligar is the base form of this evolutionary line.

  • Hyper Cutter prevents Attack from being lowered by other Pokémon — that's the one you want on Gligar. Immunity is the hidden ability. Niche, but it has its uses. Sand Veil works too if your team needs something different.

  • Gligar fills the balanced role. It's a physical attacker with base 75 Attack. Base 85 Speed is workable — faster than some, slower than many. And it's enough bulk to take a hit or two.

  • Gligar appears in 17 games, including Gold & Silver, Crystal, and Ruby & Sapphire.

Gligar has been available in 17 games since Gold & Silver, though obtaining it requires an item-based evolution. This extra step makes it less common than Pokemon found through standard wild encounters.
