Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon Abilities
The expanded Alola doubles down on signature abilities. Necrozma guards itself with Prism Armor and trades it for Neuroforce as Ultra Necrozma, while every Ultra Beast snowballs knockouts into stat boosts through Beast Boost.

Ability Spotlight
Prism Armor
Necrozma anchors the Ultra saga, and Prism Armor is its dark crystal shell doing quiet work: super effective hits deal only three quarters of their usual damage. Weaknesses still exist, they just matter less, which is exactly the arrogance you want from the Pokemon that stole the light.

Water Bubble
Araquanid's Water Bubble might be the most generous ability ever printed. Fire damage halved, burns impossible, and its own Water attacks doubled, three upsides bundled into one wet helmet. A mid-tier bug walks around with it like it's nothing.

Comatose
Permanent sleep sounds like a death sentence, but Comatose turns it into armor: Komala can never be poisoned, burned, or paralyzed, yet it attacks right on schedule. Alola's koala naps through every status war unbothered.

How Abilities Work in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
The new signatures ignore abilities
Sunsteel Strike, Moongeist Beam, and Photon Geyser punch straight through the defender's passive: Levitate does not float over them and Disguise does not absorb them. It is the sharpest ability counterplay the series had printed to date.
Hail finally earned its keep
Aurora Veil halves incoming damage of both kinds but only goes up while it hails, which makes Snow Warning setters the enablers of the strategy. An Alolan Ninetales lead can raise the strongest defensive screen in the game on turn one.
New in Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon
USUM completes Alola's set of passives with a handful of top-shelf additions tied to its cover mythology. Most of what appears here arrived with Sun and Moon; the newcomers exist to crown it.
Pokémon Abilities: Frequently Asked
What abilities do the Necrozma forms use in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon?
Necrozma and its Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings fusions rely on Prism Armor, which softens incoming super effective damage. Push further into Ultra Necrozma and the ability flips to Neuroforce, boosting the super effective damage it deals instead. The two abilities mirror each other, defense on one side and offense on the other.
Do all Ultra Beasts really share one ability?
Yes, every Ultra Beast runs Beast Boost, which raises its strongest stat each time it scores a knockout. The newcomers Blacephalon and Stakataka follow the same rule. It is the closest the series has come to a faction-wide ability, and it makes any Ultra Beast a snowball threat if left unchecked.
Does USUM add abilities that Sun and Moon lacked?
The additions are narrow and tied to new forms, with Neuroforce on Ultra Necrozma as the headline. The broader Generation 7 pool is unchanged, so returning players keep every ability interaction they already know while the new content concentrates its novelty in the Necrozma storyline and the extra Ultra Beasts.
Can I still SOS chain for Hidden Abilities in USUM?
Yes, the SOS system returns with adjustments, and chained allies still offer improved odds at Hidden Abilities. The Adrenaline Orb works as before. Combined with the expanded Alola dex, that makes these versions the better pick of the generation for players whose main goal is collecting rare ability rolls.
Do Totem Stickers change any abilities?
No, the sticker hunt rewards you with totem-sized Pokémon from Samson Oak, and their abilities are the normal ones for each species. The draw is the size and the collecting itself. Think of it as a scavenger hunt layered over Alola rather than a new ability mechanic hiding in plain sight.
